Do U Know - P.Amudha and Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion of Rural Sanitation in Tamilnadu

The partnership between UNICEF and the State Government resulted in the rural sanitation coverage in Tamil Nadu going up to 40 % in 2004 from 15 % in 2001.
(Yes this means only 15% of the Tamilnadu rural population had access to a toilet in 2001).

The Government of Tamil Nadu honoured UNICEF Project Officer P.Amudha (in Unicef from Indian Administrative Service) with a Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Promotion of Rural Sanitation in the state.

Source : Unicef

Tamilnadu is considered perhaps one of the better developed states, yet if 60% of its rural population dont have access to a toilet? Then what is development?

And what do we require for change? Sincere Administration, More Money, Political Will, Involvement of the common person, Better coverage from Media. I am not sure if I know the answers.

But when I come across the figures, (while searching for my weekly Do U Know), I mostly end up in despair, and wonder if anything can be really done.

Well seems positive change and development, is not just a dream, it can be a reality too.

  1. P.Amudha. I remember a friend of mine sending me an entire article on this issue. He is a reporter himself and was arguing about something and sent me this. And your question made me search for it again:)

  3. :)akruti that was fast.

generally i dont like to focus on persons for issues.
for eg, when media highlighted, satyendra dubey for corruption. (yet when it turned out that he was murdered as part of robbery, the issue of corruption, which dubey had fought, too seem to vanish)

but on this occassion, i have to admit that after reading what was done, it just took will

there are many like them, who are perhaps not given their due, unfortunately by the media, who could be a real source of inspiration.

  6. Just an FYI.....
    P. Amudha, an Indian Administrative Service Officer from Tamil Nadu, came to work in UNICEF in 2001 as an officer on deputation to work specifically on water and sanitation issues. The rural sanitation picture in Tamil Nadu at the time was grim – only 15 % of the population had access to a toilet. The rural sanitation coverage in Tamil Nadu increased to 40 % in 2004 from 15 % in 2001 – a mere three years after Amudha became part of the programme.

Malwadi is the first village to put the sigh board at the entrance of the village which says that the village is free of public defecation.
Malwadi in Maharashtra is perhaps the only village in India where they fine you Rs 500 for defecating in public. Even kids aren't spared. They got to shell out Rs 100. The campaign was started by but Chhaya Kamble, a petite dark Dalit woman, she dint even make it to high school.

  18. Hey looks like the answer is out there already...This is what happens when people tend to take initiative to their heart. When asked abt this Amudha said, 'Achieving merely what is possible does not give satisfaction. Achieving the impossible is what really gives the greatest satisfaction and joy.'

Awesome and something for us to learn!!

  19. Hi D (O Wise One),

    "Then what is development?"
Agreed that 40% is not exactly a good percentage wrt sanitation, but I beliv the improvement from 15% is very significant. Its a clear indication of development. If the figure was 100%, we would not have been called a 'developing' nation. And a 25% leap is a tremendous achievement.

"And what do we require for change?"
    Increased awarenes among ppl.

"I mostly end up in despair"
What is there to despair bout???
Look at the brighter side Psycho...:D

Nice to know bout P.Amudha and Chhaya Kamble
Wish the example of Malwadi was carried out in Mumbai...:(

    BTW u belong to the 40% na....:D
No offense mnt.....just my stupid sense of humour or the lack of it....but cudnt resist...:D

  23. TN's govt. have been good in that sense. The Mid-day meal scheme, the free bicycles for girl children of school-going age, etc. How i wish our northern state governments were as worried about education and sanitation...
